Source: VietNamNetA Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) proposal aims to have as many as 95% of handicapped children attending school by 2015.

Disabled children are now taught not only at kindergartens and primary schools but also at vocational training centres, colleges and universities.

The proposal is part of MoET’s plan of action for the 2006-2015 period, which has been submitted to the Prime Minister for approval.

MoET estimates to spend VND450bil (US$28,12mil) for research and production of school aids for disabled children and VND1.5bil ($93,750) for improving the education system for disabled children by 2010. Meanwhile, free-of-charge school materials, equipment and assistance facilities will be supplied to disabled children.

Vietnam will also develop special schools for disabled children with centres for education and integration being set up in all provinces nationwide.

In addition, more than VND600bil ($37.5mil) will be reserved for training teachers to teach disabled children, with a target of one teacher for every 300 disabled children.

Government statistics reveal the number of disabled children going to school has increased from 42,000 in 1996 to 270,000 at present, a 6-fold increase.

Disabled children are now taught not only at kindergartens and primary schools but also at vocational training centres, colleges and universities.

The country now has more than 2,500 schools and 105 special education establishments for disabled children.
